December

Wednesday, December 13th

Dear Lafayette Families,

Greetings from NatureBridge!  Our 5th grade students are spending 3 days in the Marin Headlands studying environmental science.  As part of our Lafayette science curriculum, all 5th graders have the opportunity to put what they have learned during their years at Lafayette to the test as they study natural watersheds, learn about native local flora and fauna, and practice being stewards of our environment.  Over the course of their stay at NatureBridge, students will practice being environmental scientists as they talk about real world issues and discuss ways that they can help solve some of these problems.  On our first day in the field students participated team building activities, set personal goals for the week, and explored the immediate surroundings.  See photos below from the first day.

Our 4th Annual Lafayette Family Service Night was another success.  Thank you families for coming out to support our local community here in the Richmond.  A special thanks to the PTA parents and volunteers that organized the event and made it happen.  I have attached photos of tonights event.

I would like to update you on the letter that was sent home last week about our Lafayette School volunteer.  After an investigation by both SFPD and SFUSD, authorities have concluded that there was never any misconduct by this volunteer at school.  I would like to thank all parents and families that came in to speak to me about this over that past week.  I am so appreciative to be part of a staff and school community that without fail comes together to support one another during challenging times.  This shows the true character of our community and it is a powerful example for the children that we teach.

Please remember that this Friday Lafayette is hosting a "Keeping Kids Safe Workshop" for parents.  This training will be presented by Safe and Sound (formally the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center) this Friday, December 15, beginning at 8 am in the Donna Jer Library.  This hour-long presentation should be very informative and is designed to help parents with ways to speak to children about child abuse, identify warning signs, and appropriate action steps if child abuse is suspected.

The latest Annual Give Campaign numbers are in.  So far we have raised $79,960!  That is positive news, but we need to keep up the good work.  Although we are over 60% towards our goal, we have only received donations from 20% of families.  If you have not contributed to the annual Give Campaign this year, I ask that you help us raise the necessary money to maintain the wonderful programs that we have here at our school.  The PTA will be sending home end of the year donation reminders next week. I urge you to please participate in this year's AGC.

Have a wonderful week ahead.  See you on the yard at Lafayette.

Sincerely,

Heath Caceres and Jake Hodgson

Hello Lafayette Families,

As I relayed in and earlier email, this week all of our students are receiving lessons in safe touch and safe actions.  In light of this, Lafayette is hosting a "Keeping Kids Safe Workshop" for parents.  This training will be presented by Safe and Sound (formally the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center) next Friday, December 15, beginning at 8 am in the Donna Jer Library.  This hour-long presentation should be very informative and is designed to help parents with ways to speak to children about child abuse, identify warning signs, and appropriate action steps if child abuse is suspected.  I know these are tough subjects to broach, but we feel it is vital that our community be updated and have all the information in regard to keeping our children safe.  If you plan to attend, please RSVP in the main office M-F between 7:30 - 3:30, call 415 750-8483, or email sch664@sfusd.edu.  Safe and Sound needs accurate counts so that they can make sure to bring the correct number of materials for participants.

Lafayette has a number of other school events and activities that are upcoming.  Outlined here is a list of school events for December:

  • This month's highlighted core value is cooperation.  All month long we will be teaching lessons and celebrating cooperation and working together.
  • This whole week is Inclusion Week here at Lafayette.  We have assemblies, classroom presentations and grade level projects happening at school throughout the week.
  • Crazy Hair Day - Friday, December 8.
  • Our Winter concert is next Tuesday, December 12.  There are 9 AM and 10 AM performances.  Parents and families are welcome to attend.
  • Lafayette Family Service Night - December 13 at 6:30.
  • The Kindergarten and 1st grade Holiday Program is Tuesday, December 19.  This begins at 8:30 AM.  Parents and families are welcome to attend.

5th Grade families - This is a reminder that application forms for middle school are due next month.  Please make sure that you get them in!  if you need any assistance or have any questions, please come by the main office.  We can help.

Have a wonderful week ahead.  See you at school.

Sincerely,

Heath Caceres and Jake Hodgson
