Principal Message
Dear Lafayette Community,

Next Friday, May 25, 2018 from 8am to 9am, we will be hosting a Principal's Coffee in the Donna Jer Library in order to discuss how to strengthen community outreach, further build our Lafayette community and begin to learn about and develop an English Learners Advisory Committee (ELAC) with the support of District personnel.  This meeting will be translated into Cantonese and Spanish.  Our goal is to develop the means to reach as many members of the Lafayette community as effectively as possible to improve ongoing communication and participation.  We know how important it is to get community feedback and share experiences in order to develop and implement a plan to further engage all members of our school community.  We hope to see you there.  Coffee and tea will be provided.  See below translated versions of this invite.

Lafayette students and families made the front cover of the SF Chronicle Bay Area section this week.  On Wednesday our 3rd Grade classes participated in the Adopt-a-Beach cleanup day.  Organized by the Marine Science Institute, this annual event gives our students the opportunity to take all that they have learn about being stewards to the environment and put these lessons into practice.  You may read the full article and view the pictures here https://www.sfgate.com/green/article/Tricks-of-the-Trash-Bay-Area-kids-enjoy-annual-12920253.php.  I want to appreciate all our third grade students, teachers, and parents for doing their part to help clean up our beaches and protect our environment.

Thank you to everybody that came out yesterday for our STEM afternoon at Lafayette.  It was a fun-filled afternoon of teaching and learning.  I also want to celebrate out first annual Family Code Night that took place afterward.  A very special thank you to Janet Welsh and Rowena Tong for helping to plan and organize the events.  It was pretty great to watch all the engaged Lafayette students involved in STEM activities and demonstrating their knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
We are so happy to be working with you in growing and sustaining our wonderful Lafayette community of diverse teachers and learners. Have a wonderful week ahead.
Warm Regards,

Heath Caceres and Jake Hodgson

Principal Message

Dear Lafayette Parents and Families,

It has already been a very busy May at school beginning with Staff Appreciation Week.  I want to give a big shout out to all of the parent volunteers for decorating, setting up, and serving up a wonderful lunch from Burma Superstar.  Teachers and staff were impressed and left with full bellies and feeling much appreciated.  A special thanks to Barbara Herrmann for pulling off yet another successful staff luncheon.  The goal of the week was to celebrate our superhero teachers.  I feel fortunate each and every day to have the opportunity to work with this wonderful group of educators.  Lafayette is so lucky to have such dedicated and competent teachers.  They truly are superheroes.  Likewise, our teachers are so thankful that Lafayette has such caring and supportive parents.  It takes a village and support like this makes the difference.  Weeks like this really highlight the very best of our Lafayette community.  Thank you!

Spring has sprung and there are many upcoming events and activities happening in the month of May at Lafayette.  STEM Week begins this coming Monday and we will celebrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math each day.  This culminates with our afternoon STEM Open House on Thursday afternoon from 2 - 4.  Teachers will be opening up their classrooms and filling the hallways with STEM projects, activities, and investigations that our students have been engaged with all year long.  Afterwards we will have Family Code Night.  It happens at 5 PM to 6:30 PM in the Sandi Berger Auditorium. Parents please bring your children and participate in a fun, FREE evening event for all K-5 kids and their families to explore computer science and coding together. No coding experience needed! Join us for a fun hands-on experience to learn more about computer science education in San Francisco!  Please RSVP that you are coming by emailing tongr@sfusd.edu
Please see attachment below regarding Garden Work Day and Community Celebration next Saturday, May 19, at Lafayette.  Also remember that tomorrow is our Giorgio's Pizza fundraiser.  15% of all sales come back to Lafayette School.  Have a wonderful week ahead.  Looking forward to seeing you as we celebrate our children's achievements and learnings this year in Science Technology, Engineering and Math.  And of course, Happy Mother's Day!

All the Best,

Heath Caceres and Jake Hodgson
